It finally happened. A movie not named Star Wars took the top spot at the box office. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle took claimed pole position atop the box office with an estimated $37.2 million. The Kevin Hart, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jack Black, and Karen Gillian comedy-action-adventure sequel has been extremely successful for Sony. The film already made over $520 million worldwide and has further cemented not only the comedic duo of Hart and Johnson, but also Johnson's extraordinary bankability at the box office.
Despite the House of Mouse's crown jewel finishing in third place with an estimated $23.7 million, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been raking in cash hand over fist. The Last Jedi has made over 1.2 billion worldwide and will continue to add to that impressive total throughout January. The only newcomer to the top ten, Insidious: The Last Key, finished in second place with a respectable $29.6 million.
Next week sees wide releases of several films including, Liam Neeson's The Commuter, the animated family friendly sequel Paddington 2, the action film Proud Mary, and Steven Spielburg's The Post.
